@Barlow's Knoll and Brickyard Fight | Animated Battle Map
The Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863, when the lead elements of Confederate General A. P. Hill's Corps came into contact with United States cavalry outside the little town of Gettysburg. Soon, both sides would be embroiled in a desperate fight that lasted another two days and resulted in over 50,000 casualties.
To the north of the town of Gettysburg, Richard Ewell's corps came down and engaged the eleventh corps under Oliver Otis Howard. They would battle over a knoll (later to be called Barlow's Knoll) and the final fight would take place in a brickyard on the north end of town.
